Enivronmental Scientist-Planner
Location: Buffalo, New York (position requires occasional travel)
Do you have a passion for the environment and a drive to lead impactful projects? Our Buffalo office is searching for a full-time Senior Environmental Scientist-Planner. The right candidate will have specialized expertise in one or more areas of practice including: air and noise studies/analyses; historic/cultural resources; ecology/wildlife biology/wetlands; water quality/stormwater; documentation of social/economic/environmental justice impacts, Phase I/II field investigations; and coordination and completion of various regulatory permit applications. Work may also require the development of specifications, drawings, and preliminary cost estimates in support of these projects. The ideal person will have a multi-disciplinary background and also have experience in proposal development and proposal cost estimation. Employee must be equally comfortable in the field and writing reports and conducting analyses.
Clients include various state agencies (NYSDOT, NYSTA, SUCF, DASNY, NYSDEC, OGS, NYCDEP), local governments, and authorities (NYPA, PANYNJ, MTA, etc.) across New York but with an upstate New York focus. Individual projects may include bridge, trail, highway, aviation, building, planning, and institutional redevelopment and expansion projects.
What You'll Do:
- Perform field work, measurements, analyses, documentation, and research as needed on project basis
- Assist with leading environmental assessment documents and design
- Complete building inventories and sampling methodologies for proposed renovation or demolition projects
- Be the Face of Watts: Maintain and build client relationships while responding to new business opportunities.
- Occasional travel as needed on project basis
Who We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience
- HAZWOPER, OSHA 10, Confined Space, USDOT Transporter, Asbestos, Lead, etc. strongly preferred
- Familiar with State and Federal environmental regulations
- A clean driving record and the flexibility to travel when needed
What Will Set You Apart:
- Self-motivated, reliable, detail oriented, and show ability to use sound judgment and a problem solver
- Proficiency in ARC GIS a plus
- Familiarity with any of the above listed agencies is also a major plus

Asbestos/Environmental Technician
Location: Buffalo, New York (position requires occasional travel)
Our Buffalo office has an immediate opening for an Asbestos/Environmental Technician to join the team. If you're a problem solver with a proactive attitude, and comfortable working independently in dynamic environments like construction sites, then you would make a great fit!
What You’ll Do:
- Work under the direction of our Project Managers
- Oversee various abatement and remediation project activities while maintaining detailed daily records.
- Conduct building inspections, collect samples of asbestos, PCB-containing materials, and lead-based paint, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, including sample location drawings, photographs, and lab data.
- Lead the project closeout process by compiling final reports that meet client expectations.
Who You Are:
- You thrive on your feet, easily carrying equipment through project sites, and enjoy interacting with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- You have strong initiative, clear communication skills, and the ability to adapt to various challenges.
- 0-3 years of experience and have a valid driver's license
- You’re available for short-duration overnight travel across New York State and have a valid driver’s license.
- Bonus if you bring certifications in asbestos, lead, mold, or hazardous materials—though we’ll support your growth if not!

Asbestos Investigator (NYC)
Location: Brooklyn, New York (position entails some travel)
We have an immediate opening for a Mid-Level Asbestos Inspector/Investigator in our NYC office. The firm operates with a flexible schedule but one that understands the needs of our clients and their deadlines. It's vital the candidate be dependable and an effective communicator. This position is an integral part of a dedicated Environmental Department team. Watts' Environmental Teams support clients and projects that involve building renovation and demolition projects throughout the Downstate area. Some of Watts' established clients include various city, state and federal agencies for projects at Colleges, Universities, Education, and Health Facilities. If you're a problem solver with a proactive attitude, and comfortable working independently in dynamic environments like construction sites, then you would make a great fit!
What You’ll Do:
- Conduct building inspections, collect samples of asbestos, PCB-containing materials, and lead-based paint, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, including sample location drawings, photographs, and lab data.
- Comfortable interpreting, NYC DEP Title 15, NYS ICR 56 and other applicable regulations
- Work with NYC agencies (Port Authority, NYCHHC, DCAS, MTA, etc.) and experienced in filing ACP forms with NYC DEP ARTS.
Who You Are:
- You have strong initiative, clear communication skills, and the ability to adapt to various challenges.
- Someone with at least two years of experience in the building hazmat inspection field.
- Familiar with pertinent asbestos federal, state and local regulations and specifically with NYS ICR 56 and NYC DEP Title 15, Chapter 1 of the Rules of the City of New York.
- Familiar with OSHA regulations and requirements.
- Self-motivated, reliable, detail oriented, and show ability to use sound judgment and a problem solver.
- Possess a vehicle which they will use to travel to the work sites, within the five-boroughs of NYC and Hudson Valley area.
Certifications & Qualifications:
- Hold current NYC DEP Asbestos Investigator and NYS DOL Asbestos Inspector certifications
- Able to use spreadsheets and word files (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office programs)
What Will Set You Apart:
- Candidates with a B.S. degree in environmental sciences, engineering or similar disciplines are preferred.
- Additional certifications as a Project Monitor, Project Designer, EPA Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor certifications and 40-Hour HAZWOPER are a plus

Environmental Consultant / Engineer
Location: Brooklyn, New York (position entails some travel)
Join our NYC team as an Environmental Consultant / Engineer and make a difference in the city’s environmental landscape. You’ll play a key role in asbestos, lead-based paint, and PCB sealant inspections, as well as mold assessments and construction-related abatement/remediation. This person needs to be dependable, able to work independently, and problem solve. If you’re detail-oriented, thrive in fast-paced environments, and enjoy collaborating with architects and engineers, this role is for you.
What You'll Do:
- Conduct thorough asbestos and mold assessments, prepare detailed reports, and collaborate on abatement/remediation construction documents.
- Collaborate with our internal and external teams to develop abatement/remediation construction documents.
- Prepare site-specific petitions & review submittals and provide clarification during construction.
- Provide expert insight into NYC DEP Title 15, NYS ICR 56, and related regulations.
- Coordinate with NYC and NYS agencies to ensure compliance and successful project outcomes.
- Train and manage junior staff. The ideal candidate will have prior management experience.
Who We’re Looking For:
- College degree or some higher education
- Must hold current NYCDEP Asbestos Investigator and NYSDOL Asbestos Inspector & Designer certifications.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience performing surveys and designs for asbestos, PCBs, hazardous materials, etc.
- A deep understanding of NYC, NYS, and Federal asbestos regulations (NYC DEP Title 15, NYS ICR 56, and other applicable regulations).
- Experience working with NYC and NYS agencies is a must (Port Authority, NYC+HHC, NYCDDAS, MTA, DASNY, SUCF, OGS, CUNY, etc.)
What Will Set You Apart:
- HAZWOPER 40-hour training.
- Lead-Based Paint Risk Assessor or Inspector Certification.
- Experience preparing proposals and project management.
