Abatement in Action at Fingerlakes DDSO
August 11, 2025
Since March, Zac from our Rochester Office has been on-site at the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities’ (OPWDD) Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Service Office (FLDDSO) on behalf of Dormitory Authority State of New York (DASNY). Zac also shared some photographs to illustrate his daily experiences, and the progress made. (Check out our social feeds for more photos.)
Watts is undertaking project oversight and conducting air sampling during the hazardous materials abatement and asbestos removal process involving not just asbestos, but lead (from lead-based paint), and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Zac has been onsite daily, working with American Environmental to oversee the removal of asbestos containing drywall joint compound, flooring, and sealants. This extensive project encompasses over 50,000 square feet of asbestos drywall and over 19,000 square feet of asbestos flooring.
Zac described the transformation: "Throughout this project, I have witnessed the transition of the building from an unused live-in treatment facility to merely an outer shell. The plan is to renovate it for approximately 30 patients. To achieve this, Watts has made sure that all hazardous waste regulations are adhered to, both on the roof and within the premises, including the excavation areas."
We appreciate Zac taking the time to share his experiences with this project and look forward to the full renovation.
