Schenck House and Restroom Restoration at the Grover Cleveland Golf Course
Buffalo, New York
Buffalo is home to the Grover Cleveland Golf Course and Park, a 111-acre park encompassing an 18-hole golf course. The Schenck House (and associated structures), a historic building on the property, is one of the oldest stone buildings in Erie County likely dating back to the early 1820s. Erie County sought to renovate the interior of the facility (including the main stone house and adjacent brick outbuilding) and surrounding exterior property ultimately selecting Watts as the prime consultant. The design work included hazardous materials testing and removal, exterior envelope rehabilitation (including new historically sensitive windows and doors, a new roof, reconstructing damaged wood trim, repointing masonry, and structural repairs), a full interior gut renovation (including replacement of failing structural members, stairs, rebuilding interior floors and walls, as well as new historically appropriate finishes), full mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades, and associated site work. These improvements transformed the vacant main house structure to one which welcomes the community and celebrates the building and area’s history as a museum. As well as the adjacent brick outbuilding to include toilet room renovations accommodating golfers nearby. The renovated spaces are now accessible to people of all abilities while respecting the historic fabric of the structure and property.
