SUNY Cortland, New School of Education with Integrated Child Care Center

The State University Construction Fund and SUNY at Cortland demolished the "A" wing of the Van Hoesen Hall Practice School, constructed a new building addition to Cornish Hall, and added a new outdoor playground courtyard.  The 2.9-acre project site was centrally located within the 191-acre SUNY at Cortland campus.  

A pre-demolition survey identified that asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, and polychlorinated biphenyls were present.  Watts prepared contract documents detailing how to properly handle the removal of these materials to secure the safety and health of building occupants and workers during the demolition and renovations.
 
This project area currently drains to Otter Creek, a small tributary to the Tioghnioga River along the northerly edge of the campus.  Watts designed the treatment system for the stormwater runoff from this project site prior to discharge to the drainage system leading to Otter Creek.  The civil engineering involved preparation of the general permit for earthwork disturbances, stormwater discharges, and preparation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan for erosion and sediment controls.  Watts designed and managed through construction water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage and gas relocations and extensions to service the building addition as well as paving and grading.
