University at Buffalo, North Campus, Heart of the Campus Phase 3 Global Market Cafe
Amherst, New York
The Heart of the Campus (HOTC) Phase 3, Global Market Café, represents an expansion project situated between Capen and Norton Halls on the University at Buffalo’s North campus. Its primary objective is to introduce a new restaurant and dining facility within the existing infrastructure, utilizing the overhangs of Capen Hall and the courtyard between Norton and Capen Halls.
The designated site encompasses the space between Capen Hall and Norton Hall, spanning from the loading dock area on the North side to the Founder’s Plaza area on the South side. The design goal was to establish optimal site boundaries in collaboration with UB to facilitate the development of the Global Market Café. Additionally, the consultant assessed and managed potential impacts of the new kitchen’s discharges on the pre-existing rooftop photovoltaic system installed on Norton Hall.
The project’s physical extension involves enclosing the current exterior courtyard on the South side of Capen and Norton Halls. Aligned with UB’s Master Plan, this new multi-story structure is intended to serve as a visual focal point, seamlessly integrating with Capen and Founder’s Plaza. Furthermore, the addition will encompass the existing covered overhangs of Capen Hall, creating designated seating areas and egress pathways.
This endeavor represents a significant enhancement to the campus environment, fostering both functional and aesthetic improvements in line with the university’s vision.
